World Cup Group D Predictions

Italy:

When you analyse pre-tournament favourites, the Azzurri don’t often enter the conversation though that doesn’t mean they aren’t a talented group. This remains a loaded squad from top-to-bottom and they should be able to place first in what promises to be a very competitive Group D. They’re fresh off an excellent showing at the 2012 World Cup, losing to a powerhouse Spanish squad in the Finals. With the enigmatic Mario Balotelli up front, and Andrea Pirlo as the midfield maestro, the Italians are strong in the centre and possess no real weaknesses. With a potentially easy Group C match-up in the round of 16, the Azzurri are set up nicely for another deep run.

England:

The failures of English football on the world stage are widely renowned, and while many seem to be predicting yet another collapse this year, let’s not let the past cloud our judgement of the future. Though Group D has been dubbed as the ‘Group of Death’ the English enter in fine form while ushering in a new era of youngsters to the squad. The Lions do possess a lot of new faces to their squad, but that should be a good thing this time around in Brazil. Expect a line-up loaded with skill, speed, and attacking flair, with the ability to match most in the world. Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain provide stunning pace from the flanks, and their skipper Steven Gerrard is as solid as they come. Add in the fact that Wayne Rooney finally enters a major competition as fully fit, and England is primed to do damage in Brazil.

Uruguay:

The Uruguayans have recently emerged as a new powerhouse on the international stage. Fresh off a fourth-place finish in South Africa, Uruguay will be looking to at least match that in Brazil. This time around however they have not been blessed with an easy group stage. Being paired with the likes of Italy and England puts their advancement to the round of 16 in serious doubt, and an added injury concern to star striker Luis Suarez definitely complicates matters. Suarez recently underwent surgery on his knee and his return is in doubt for Uruguay’s opener on the 14th of June. Along with Edinson Cavani and Diego Forlan, Uruguay possesses a wealth of attacking options and will not struggle to score goals. They do however have immense difficulty at keeping balls out of their net, and their depth could come into question. While many have dubbed them to advance to the round of 16, a solid Italy squad and a revamped England side will be tough to contend with. If Suarez isn’t fit, 2014 in Brazil could prove to be a massive disappointment for Uruguay.

Costa Rica:

Let’s get one thing clear – the Costa Ricans are simply happy to be here. The afterthoughts in a ultra-competitive Group D, Costa Rica are likely losers of three straight contests in Brazil. Although they do have some solid pieces, Costa Rica should be overwhelmed against the talented opposition in Group D. They are heralded as a group that is defensively organised but their attacking options are limited. A win in Brazil would truly be shocking for the Group D

Predicted Order of Finish:

1) Italy
2) England
3) Uruguay
4) Costa Rica

Italy are veteran-led and generally a solid group that should encounter minimal resistance in Group D. England and Uruguay will battle it out for 2nd, ultimately with the Lions surprising and advancing to the round of 16. Uruguay will have a hole to fill without Suarez, and may struggle to cope. Costa Rica are just along for the ride in a group they won’t be able to compete in.
