World Cup Group F Predictions

The Argentinians enter Brazil 2014 as loaded as ever and should be considered as legitimate threats to be the overall winners when all is said and done. Among all 32 teams, no squad possesses the elite firepower they do in the attacking third. With the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Aguero, and Gonzalo Higuain, Argentina are an embarrassment of riches when they have the ball. However their one downfall may just be their play without it. Argentina remain vulnerable against set pieces, and for an elite side, they do boast a fairly susceptible back-line. While Argentina will coast through the group stages, their play on the defensive side of the ball will dictate if they are crowned world champions.

Bosnia & Herzegovina:

Despite being World Cup debutants in 2014, many expect a solid showing from the newbies in Brazil. Led by star striker Edin Dzeko, the Bosnians can strike fear into any back-line. The squad is riddled with talented playmakers that can generate opportunities from all areas of the pitch, but their defensive acumen and balance throughout the team may instill some doubts. Ultimately they are far too reliant on very few star players. Even if they do advance from a tough-to-call Group F, they’ll make for easy fodder in the knockout stages. Look for Bosnia to sit back and avoid defeat against Argentina, but this is a squad that will try to all-out attack against the likes of Iran and Nigeria.

One of the best squads in all of Africa, the Nigerians enter Brazil 2014 riding a wave of confidence. They produced a fairly solid showing at last year’s Confederations Cup, and a new emphasis on pace and power has gotten them desired results in recent months. They are particularly dangerous when counter-attacking and their recent run of solid defensive form has their supporters looking forward to their showing in Brazil. This is a balanced squad with some big-name players that won’t be intimidated in this group. Nigeria is used to the hot temperatures and don’t be surprise if they cause some noise in Brazil. Ultimately it’ll come down to them or Bosnia advancing as the second team out of Group F.

A bit of a surprise inclusion to this year’s World Cup, Iran arrives with a predominately domestic-based squad. Overall they hold an abysmal World Cup record, netting just one victory from nine attempts. Although their group isn’t overly difficult, this version of the Iranian side likely won’t improve that statistic. They are a squad that lacks depth, balance, and offensive creativity, and should be shredded against all three of these Group F squads. While they put together an impressive qualifying run against the Asian countries, going against the world’s best will be a real eye-opener as to just how far the Iranians are from truly competing at this level.

Group F Predicted Order of Finish:

1) Argentina
2) Nigeria
3) Bosnia & Herzegovina
4) Iran

Argentina are clearly the class of this group and will use these opening three matches to fully prepare for crucial knockout stage games. Nigeria and Bosnia-Herzegovina will be a harsh battle for second place with their match-up proving critical. Iran claim they won’t be going to Brazil as tourists, but they might as well be given the quality of their squad.
