World Cup Group G Predictions

Germany:

Group G stands as one of the more difficult groups from this year’s World Cup tournament, however that may not be a bad thing for the Germans.  Germany will face three stiff tests in their opening round fixtures, preparing them for the rigors of the playoff round.  Like always, Germany returns yet another solid, balanced team that has the potential for immense success.  Weaknesses are few and far between with this squad, and their attacking prowess can stand up against anyone in the competition.  They didn’t lose one match in the qualification stage, and along with the Argentinians and Brazilians, pose as real contenders to lift the trophy on July 13th.

Portugal:

The Portuguese didn’t have the most convincing of qualifying runs in order to get to Brazil, but now that they’re here this remains a group that can cause real damage.  Led by one of the greatest players of our generation in Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal attacks with pace and flair, putting pressure on any defense they’re faced with.  Unfortunately this year’s team does lack some of the key depth of previous tournaments.  Options are limited off of the bench, and opposing teams will heavily defend Ronaldo and he could try to do too much as a result.  Newcomer in the midfield William Carvalho will be counted upon to step up, despite his young age.  Overall this is a solid team and they should have enough talent to advance from a very difficult group.

Ghana:

Ghana had to be shaking their heads when they saw the level of difficulty Group G will bring.  This is an excellent squad that realistically could qualify in the majority of other groups, but being matched against Germany and Portugal will be no easy feat.  The Black Stars are both feisty and speedy and know how to defend when they take the lead.  The problem is their creativity in the attacking third.  Going against some of the toughest back-lines will prove to be a stiff challenge for Ghana who have limited striker options up front.  They’ll give every team a challenge, but ultimately fall just short of advancing to the knockout stages.

USA:

Like Ghana, the Americans also had to be a tad upset with their luck in the drawing of groups.  Being matched against powerhouses in Germany and Portugal, and a tough third team in Ghana, leaves them with virtually no chance of advancing to the round of 16.  While they are strong enough to hang around in this group, expecting huge results won’t be in the cards in Brazil.  The Americans are led by former German coach Jurgen Klinsmann, and he’s tried to usher in a new era of American soccer with younger and fresher faces.  Landon Donavan was a controversial cut to the squad, but newcomers like Julian Green and Omar Gonzalez represent the future.  Expect tough performances from the USA, but ultimately this is a team that will struggle to create chances against some of the world’s best.  A third place finish is likely all they can hope for.

Group G Predicted Order of Finish:

  1. Germany
  2. Portugal
  3. Ghana
  4. USA

Germany is the class of this group and will use these opening fixtures to prepare for the challenges of the knockout round.  Portugal will be challenged for the second spot, but should hold off a hungry squad from Ghana.  The USA will gain some valuable experience, but that’s about it in a supremely difficult Group G.
