World Cup Group H Predictions

After years of hype and promise, the Belgians are finally relevant on the world stage once again and big things are expected from them in Brazil. This is as deep of a squad as Belgium has ever possessed, and the versatility throughout the line-up will allow manager Marc Wilmots ultimate flexibility against stiffer competition. Eden Hazard is one of the world’s best players, and the winger will be imperative to setting up prolific Everton striker Romelu Lukaku. They’ll be explosive in attack, and while they may be susceptible in their wing-back positions, this is a group that outscores their mistakes. While many don’t consider Belgium to be perennial football powerhouses, nobody should take this team likely. A round of 16 match-up against Portugal seems likely, and they’ll be expected to win that.

After a failed stint as the boss of the English national team, manager Fabio Capello is now in charge in Russia where he hopes his fortunes will turn for the better. He oversees a strong and balanced squad with great familiarity with one another from the Russian domestic league. The Russians didn’t score much in qualifying but were rock-solid defensively, something that will need to continue in Brazil for success. They should have enough talent to squeak by in a relatively weak Group H, but a knockout stage match-up with Germany will make this a short run for the Russians.

South Korea:

The Koreans are fast, energetic, hard-working and can definitely catch teams by surprise with their quick counter-attacks. This is a youthful group, but one that still possesses a ton of international experience. While their qualifying run was pretty mediocre, the Taeguk Warriors will be fun to watch in Brazil. They’ll surely cause headaches for the likes of Belgium and Russia, but ultimately their defensive organization and inconsistencies will be their downfall. This is a team that simply cannot defend against set pieces. Third-place is likely all they can expect from Brazil.

The Algerians return to the World Cup in 2014, fresh off their 2010 experience where they managed a grand total of 0 goals. The team is quite different this time around, and although there isn’t that much optimism, Algeria has been placed in a group where success isn’t out of the question. They can match South Korea and their defensive stability throughout qualifying may halt the attacking prowess of Belgium and Russia. While they will likely be overrun in the midfield due to a lack of ball winners and playmakers, Algeria is a spirited enough squad to contend with the South Koreans for third place in this group.

Group H Predicted Order of Finish:

1) Belgium
2) Russia
3) South Korea
4) Algeria

Belgium’s time is now and expect them to make three big statements against inferior opposition. Russia, South Korea, and Algeria will all fight for second place in a weak group, but ultimately the poise and talent of the Russians should see them through. Algeria won’t be held goalless once again.
